Summary
Since the creation of the Erasmus programme (an acronym for the European Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students) in 1987, the form and scope of student exchanges within the European Union have changed considerably. Until recently, only higher education and its educational community were concerned by the institutionalisation of mobility. Today, Erasmus+ encompasses other types of exchange and has a wider impact on Europe’s young people. We propose here a summary of the development of European public education policies and actions around mobility. We will also address the question of the evolution of the discourse that accompanies these policies, particularly concerning the existence of an Erasmus ‘generation’, and the trajectories that this programme allows, depending on the segments and levels of education concerned, from higher education to compulsory education.
